Mommy's Kitchen

Here's my latest article with Cebu Daily News - it's about the amazing discovery of children's books with recipes and actually baking the treats!

Ryan's Choco Chip Cookies

Cooking Class Project becomes a Happy Family Project

Ryan had a class project "San Benedetto's Got Talent" and he volunteered his talent in baking!  All right, come on, he's seven, so don't be a critic - but we decided to make a video of us baking choco chip cookies.

His classmates chose talents such as singing and dancing and performed in class.  I guess Ryan didn't feel comfortable singing and dancing and since we always bakes cookies in the house he decided that's his talent too.

Thus, the video - I guess his teacher, Tita Shirlyn realized she couldnt ask Ryan to bake cookies in class.

It turned out to be such great fun!  Yaya Emily served as our camera "girl".  Ryan and Mommy were the actors.

The ingredients were already available in our pantry (I usually stock up on ingredients in case we decide to bake to pass the time).  All I needed to do was measure them ahead and place them in presentable bowls (it pays to watch cooking shows).

It felt good doing the presentation as though we were pros!

The recipe has a twist in the end - with nips and candy decorations - to make it more child friendly!

We added colorful nips and candy decors!

The white board and marker came in handy!

I highly recommend baking as a family bonding opportunity with your kids.  The recipes you use need not be complicated.  Simple cookies and brownies, and pancakes are the easiest.  Then, if you and your kids are really up to it - graduate into more complicated recipes such as cakes and pies.

Here's a tip - baking that entails a lot of mashing with hands are the most fun for kids.  They just love keeping their hands dirty, and licking them (so don't be a prude and just let them lick).

What have you baked with your kids today?
